Rev Your Bev

Drop of Water

We were approached by Richmond agency Yebo to help create a 30 second animated broadcast spot for Rev Your Bev, an initiative from Virginia-based nonprofit Virginia Foundation for Healthy Youth. The key message of the spot would be that water makes us better and helps us grow.

The concept was to show how simply drinking water could empower a young princess, giving her the strength to tame a fierce dragon without the help of a knight in shining armor. We loved the agency’s take on our main character: a not-so-typical fairytale princess who clearly didn’t need a hero. She just needed the benefits of staying healthy and hydrated. Ultimately, water is the hero!

Design & Character Development

The overall style and design was intended to be simple and playful. Bold colors, stylized illustration and limited use of texture would come together to create a vibrant and fun aesthetic.

The Characters

The Princess

We wanted our characters to be stylized yet relatable. And because our princess didn’t buy into typical royalty roles, we knew we’d want to create contrast between her personal style and the more expected treatment of the knight character. She would be more of a typical teen who just happened to be a princess — posters on her wall, her tiara collecting dust on a shelf and a very casual style overall.

The Knight

The knight was a bit more straightforward and intentionally what you’d expect. We explored a few different visor styles and color options.

The Dragon

Creating the dragon was fun! With so many historic styles to draw from, we explored a variety of character treatments before landing on our devil horned, red eyed antagonist.

Animation

With an accelerated timeline, we knew that a full cel execution wasn’t in the cards. So, we combined frame by frame animation with keyframed animation to create a hybrid that allowed us to move quickly without sacrificing quality or our focus on the story. We started with an animatic to establish timing and make sure that the story was clearly conveyed.

Animatic

Then we moved into animation

We continued to refine the edit, animation and even color choices until the spot was complete.
